Installation of POV-Ray on Macintosh computers

The current Mac version on the POV-Ray download page is old, dating from Mac OS 10.2. The POV-Ray editor that this package contains is unreliable on newer Macs.

Because of this, a much better option is to compile directly from the source code. This can be very easily done by using one of Mac projects for installing open source software, such as MacPorts or Fink, both of which contain up-to-date versions of POV-Ray.

A POV-Ray installation using MacPorts or Fink will only contain the POV-Ray command-line program for rendering scenes, and will not contain a graphical editor. However, many common editors such Vim, MacVim, or Emacs can be used to edit POV-Ray files and will recognize the POV-Ray syntax.
